The perfect travel companion

Long before the tote bag, there was the cloth. In Japan, wrapping cloths known as tsutsumi were used from ancient times to carry and protect clothes, food, and treasured objects. Their story can be traced back centuries, and they appear in some of the oldest depictions of travelers.

In the Edo era (1603-1868), they took the name furoshiki. Bathhouse-goers wrapped their clothes in them and used the cloth as a mat while changing. Merchants then adopted them to carry their goods, from precious food to rare merchandise, and the humble cloth became a symbol of Japanese craftsmanship and practicality.

Today, furoshiki is just as useful: one square of fabric that wraps, carries, and travels with you.

Why am I sustainable?

Why organic cotton

Our furoshiki are made from organic cotton, a fabric that is gentler on the planet and on the people who grow it. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or GMOs, and practices like crop rotation and composting keep the soil fertile while protecting biodiversity and local water sources. With no harmful chemicals in the fields, farmers and nearby communities are also spared the exposure that comes with conventional cotton farming.

Water use is another advantage. Organic soils retain moisture better, and organic farms often rely more on rainwater, which can reduce the need for irrigation compared to conventional cotton.

A furoshiki is also made to be reused. It replaces single-use wrapping paper and bags, and with a little care it lasts for years. Choosing organic cotton is a small choice with a real impact: less environmental harm, and a more responsible textile industry.
